Microneedling: a definitive guide

Microneedling: a definitive guide

Clients who regularly undergo microneedling do so for a variety of reasons, most commonly to improve fine lines, skin tone and complexion. It’s also used as part of a regime to promote collagen production and increase firmness, and is an excellent treatment for reducing pore size.

Microneedling is a safe and effective way to ward off some of the most obvious signs of ageing, and to maintain a youthful complexion.

Here’s what you need to know about microneedling.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure performed by skin doctors and qualified nurses that promotes collagen production, resulting in smoother skin. It also helps to reduce the appearance of scars.

As a secondary benefit, microneedling can help reduce the appearance of dark spots that may appear on our faces as we age.

Microneedling stimulates collagen production by inserting tiny, sterile needles into the affected areas. These small pin pricks cause slight injury to the skin and the body responds by activating a natural healing process and producing more collagen. The new tissue created will be more even in tone and texture.

An added benefit of microneedling is that the additional collagen can also help make the skin firmer.

What does microneedling treat?

Microneedling is mostly used to plump and rejuvenate the facial area, and is also widely used to treat the neck, chest and hands. It is sometimes used in conjunction with injectables to enhance results.

The popularity of microneedling is growing due to its ability to reduce the appearance of scars, soften fine lines and wrinkles, reduce enlarged pores, and lessen the appearance of hyperpigmentation (dark spots).

Many patients also use microneedling for general skin rejuvenation, to smooth uneven skin tone and improve skin elasticity. It’s an excellent treatment for enlarged pores, as it helps reduce pore size.

Microneedling is also an effective way of increasing delivery of prescription-grade skincare and peptides into the dermis for enhanced rejuvenation and quicker recovery.

What can you expect during a microneedling procedure?

Microneedling procedures are carried out by our highly qualified nurses, under the direction of a skin doctor, in our clinic.

The practitioner uses a tool, shaped like a pen, which contains tiny needles. So small are the needles that a prick isn’t usually visible following the procedure.

Prior to the procedure, our practitioner will numb the skin with a strong prescription anaesthetic, making the procedure painless. This prescription anaesthetic is only available through a doctor-led skin clinic, which is one of our points of difference at Bass Coast Skin Doctors.

During the procedure, the practitioner moves the microneedling tool across the affected area. After the procedure, a calming serum is applied.

What are the risks or side effects of microneedling?

Microneedling is considered a safe procedure with minimal adverse effects.

Following a procedure, most people commonly experience redness, slight swelling, and temporary skin irritation such as dryness or flaking of the skin, which presents similar to sunburn, and lasts approximately three to four days.

In rare cases, microneedling can result in some other side effects, such as mild bruising or peeling.

Microneedling is not suitable for pregnant people, and they are advised to consult with their skin doctor for alternative treatment options.

What kind of results does microneedling provide?

Microneedling promotes the skin’s own self-repair system which results in smoother, younger-looking, and radiant skin. It can also reduce the appearance of scars, particularly acne scarring, and hyperpigmentation.

Patients usually see results after two or three sessions, and it’s recommended to undergo three to four treatments, four weeks apart, to achieve effective results.
